Male Pattern Hair Loss (MPHL)

Hair shedding, how much is too much?

Hair shedding is a natural process, but losing hair can be quite scary.

Being guys, we like to make out losing our hair doesn’t worry us, but the truth is when it starts happening that mentality shifts very quickly.

So how much shedding is considered normal?

It’s actually normal to lose anywhere from 50 to 100 strands of hair per day.

This may seem like a lot, but considering we have over 100,000 hair follicles on our head this daily hair loss generally goes unnoticed.

Most people notice the shedding of hair when hair is found on the pillow, in the shower or bathroom sink, or in a comb or brush.

If your hair is longer it may seem like there’s more hair coming out each day, however this is generally not the case – it’s just more noticeable.

Just remember, 50-100 hairs lost per day is an average. On days the hair is agitated you may notice more shedding and less on other days when the hair not agitated. Agitating your hair includes;

  • Washing your hair
  • Putting a cap on and off
  • Windy weather

But don’t freak out - this hair was coming out anyway so avoiding these activities won’t reduce the amount of hair shed over time.

How much shedding is too much?

Excessive shedding results in progressive thinning and decreased hair coverage to the point where the scalp can no longer be fully covered.

As the shedding progresses the usual hair style often becomes impossible – at this stage it’s definitely too much!

Quite often this is the trigger where most guys take action.

Shave it, or save it?

When to take action?

The unfortunate thing is that 50% of the scalp hair is already lost by the time the hair thinning is actually noticed.

So if excessive shedding is worrying you, the best time to take action is now.

On medication for hair loss and still shedding?

If you’re already on a medical treatment for male pattern baldness (MPB) there’s a couple of things to note;

  • When starting treatment or changing treatments, medications can actually induce extra shedding as the “old” hairs are being pushed out to make way for the new – don’t worry, this is normal and they’ll grow back.
  • Taking medication for MPB doesn’t stop the “normal” amount of shedding each day. It’s natural and part of the normal hair cycle.

The Summary

Daily hair loss of 50-100 hairs per day is normal. But if you’re worried about the amount of hair coming out each day, get professional advice. If your hair loss is excessive it can be treated and a simple consultation could put your mind at ease.
